The Institute of Mathematics originated in 1970 from the union of the Department of Mathematics (19521970),
headed by Professor Ph.D. Butlewski Zygmunt, and of the Department of Descriptive Geometry (19521970),
headed by Professor Ph.D. Wiktor Jankowski, and in part of the Centre of Mathematical Machines, headed by Associate Professor Ph.D. Henryk Wi¶niewski.
Chairs of the Institute of Mathematics in the past years:

Professor Ph.D. Wiktor Jankowski (1970 1983)

Associate Professor Ph.D. Henryk Wisniewski (1983 1987)

Professor Ph.D. Dobiesław Bobrowski (1987 1991)

Associate Professor Ph.D. Jerzy Kaczmarek (1991 1995)

Associate Professor Ph.D. Jarosław Werbowski (1995 2012)

Professor Ph.D. Ryszard Płuciennik (since 2012)

Since 1972, when the Institute of Mathematics obtained permission to confer the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy,
the Scientific Committee of the IM carried out 50 doctoral dissertations.
Since 1978, the Institute of Mathematics participated in running and supervised a master's courses:
Basic Problems of Technology Applied Mathematics and Mathematics.
Since 1964 the Institute issued research journals Geometry and Fasciculi Mathematici on an international stage. Employees of the
Institute are members of the editorial committees of many international mathematical journals and scientific organizations, including the American Mathematical Society (AMS),
the International Society for Difference Equations (ISDE) and the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM), and collaborate scientifically with many mathematical centers in the country and abroad.
They also actively participate in scientific committees and organize international scientific conferences at home and abroad. Currently, the Institute consists of four divisions:
 Mathematical Analysis
 Functional Analysis and Numerical Analysis
 Differential Equations and Functional Equations
 Applied Mathematics.
